The Blue Tang Fish The Red Of The Wild And The Reef...
Is it ethical to possess and continue to capture blue tangs from the wild to meet the increased demand for blue tangs partly due to the release of Finding Dory? Melissa Whelpton, Vivian Witzke, Serena Perras Background The Paracanthurus hepatus, commonly referred to as the blue tang, hippo tang, regal tang, blue surgeonfish, and Dory. The blue tang fish made its debut on the big screen in Disneyââ¬â¢s Finding Nemo in 2003. After Finding Nemo was released, clownfish saw a 40% increase in demand as aquarium pets (Goddard, 2016). And as you can expect blue tang species is seeing the same effects after the sequel Finding Dory. With such a demand for these beautiful fish, there is a worry that since a majority of the fish are caught in theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Currently researchers are collaborating with public zoos and aquariums to collect eggs and utilize what would otherwise be an unused resource. After five larval rearing trials were conducted, researchers have been successful in rearing larvae to 18 days post hatch which is a milestone in raising blue tangs for aquaculture (Cassiano et al., 2015). When we start looking towards using captive bred blue tangs for use in personal aqua riums we are able to decrease our dependence on the capture of wild populations. As a result stresses put on the reef such as depletion of reef resources and habitat degradation should decrease (SEAFDEC, 1999). Fish Left In The Wild When capturing fish, large adult blue tangs of breeding age and size are usually left in the wild (Adams, 2016). This is because the younger and smaller specimens are generally more desirable for aquarium pets (Adams, 2016). Since the fish that are capable of breeding are left in the wild, they are able to produce more blue tangs. This means that the source of these fish is renewable in some capacity. It is also found that where aquarium fish are captured are only a small portion of the locations where the blue tang inhabits. This means that many native blue tangs will not see the inside of an aquarium (Adams, 2016). Arguments Against: Ecosystem Disruption Most blue tangs are captured in the wild, and are taken almost exclusively from reefs in Southeast

Oedipus The King (876 words) Essay Example For Students
Oedipus The King (876 words) Essay Oedipus The KingSometimes humans try to avoid their inevitable destiny for their lives; thereare moments that we may think of ourselves as invincible and smarter than whatis already decided. There may also be a point when making a decision leads to agreat error in judgment. In Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, both ofthese problems are noticed in the character, Oedipus. They are known as tragicflaws. A tragedy must have the character to have a flaw in his hamartia. Oedipus single flaw that is pointed out is hubris, excessive pride. A singleflaw can allow a man to be defeated. Oedipus the King is a tragedy. A tragedy isa play that portrays a conflict between human beings and some superior, overwhelming force. It ends sorrowfully and disastrously, and the outcome seemsinevitable. In a tragedy, the hero is upper class that is capable of suffering. He is neither good nor bad. Due to the flaws in his actions and behaviors, hewill have everything and lose it all. He is the hero and king of Thebes, butbecause of his fate, he ends up being blind in exile. Oedipus runs from his ownhomeland including his mother and father. He is trying to escape his fate. Thegods above told him that he would, in his future, kill his father and marry hismother. By moving somewhere else, he believes his parents will be safe from him. Someone told him that Polybus and Merope were not his real parents so he askedthem, but they lied telling him they were. Oedipus still has doubts so he goesto Delphi where he is told the truth, but not the identity of his real parents. He flees Corinth where his parents are in order to avoid the prophecy. Oedipusleaves Corinth and heads in the opposite direction towards Thebes. On hisjourney, a chariot tries to run him of the road. He became very angry, whichcauses him to become violent so he kills Laius and the men who are with him. Oneman escaped the wrath of Oedipus and fled back to Thebes. Although he does notknow Laius was his father, he is one step closer to fulfilling the prophecy. Oedipus is on the path close to the town of Thebes where this is a Sphinx whokills people who cannot answer her riddle. Oedipus succeeds in solving theriddle, causing the Sphinx to destroy herself. He is received with enthusiasm bythe Thebans that just lost their king. The Thebans make him king and he marriesJocasta who was married to the late Laius. He is ignorant in knowing that notonly has he killed his father, but also now, he has married his mother. Oedipussinks low because of his tragic flaws, his actions, and his inability to dancearound ones fate. There is a plague in the land, so Oedipus wants it to goaway, so he sends Creon to Delphi to find out what to do. Creon is Jocastassister and his brother-in-law. Apollo shot an arrow, which caused the plaguebecause Laius death went unsolved. Apollo wants the killer(s) paid back forthe murder. Oedipus wants to find the murderer, so he says that whoever killedLaius will be exiled or killed. Someone tells Oedipus to send for blind Tire siaswho knows everything. Tiresias does not want to tell Oedipus the truth, butOedipus keeps harassing Tiresias even threatens him with torture. Finally, hetells Oedipus the truth but Oedipus does not want to believe the truth. Oedipusshows an error in judgment when he disregards Tiresias warning. He is toohardheaded to listen to what Tiresias has to say to him. In doing this, hecreates his own downfall. He disregards all the information given to him becausehe thinks that he can control his destiny. A servant announces to the king andhis people that Jocasta was dead. She hung herself in her bedroom when shefigured out that her husband was really her son. Her four children were by herfirst born who she thought was dead. Oedipus sees his mother/wifes body hepulls to pins out of her dress and gouges his eyes out with them. He does thisseveral times, causing blood to drip down his face and on his beard. He couldnot bear to see the damage that his life had caused. Oedipus keeps his word ofpunishing the murderer of Laius. He is sent in exile to Cithaeron where as ababy he was to have been left. He does not know if he will die there are notbecause he realizes now that the gods are in control of his destiny. Apollotakes away the plague, since the murder of Laius was solved and punishment hadbeen served. Oedipus was on top of the world and he literally lost everyone andeverything that he had loved. He tried to avoid his fate but it was meant to be,so it happened. It does not make sense why his fate must be so terrible, but itcould have to do with his single flaw. Oedipus never did anything that bad todeserve such a horrible life. At least he was man enough to realize that it wasnot only Apollos fault, but his too. He lost some of his hubris throughoutthis horrible event. This all took place in one day at the palace in Thebes. .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .postImageUrl , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:hover , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:visited , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:active { border:0!important; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:active , .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510 .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5adf2cae286bcaac0f10804a52f34510:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Evolution Charles Darwin EssayEveryone has a downfall, some just have farther to fall than others do.

Sexism in the ââ¬ÅO Reasonââ¬Â¦Ã¢â¬Â Speech of King Lear Essay Example
Sexism in the ââ¬Å"O Reasonâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Speech of King Lear Essay Sexism in the ââ¬Å"O reasonâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Speech With such powerful language and intonation, it sometimes is difficult for me to remember that King Lear is but an aged man, biased and occasionally foolish. In act two, he finally ostracizes Regan and Goneril by making sexist comments intending to wound both women. His speech has three distinct parts: distinguishing men from women, making a prayer for the present, and giving his threat for the future. Lear divides the world into two parts, one with animals, and the other with humans. The latter category is then again subdivided into men and women. He sees the section of men as like beasts, but women to almost have just a superficial view of the world by only caring about looks instead of substance. He mocks Regan and Goneril with their clothing- something he calls ââ¬Å"gorgeousâ⬠, but it ââ¬Å"scarcely keeps [them] warm. â⬠Lear must consider himself to be like a beast in that he acts as he sees practical, like keeping knights that stay loyal to him as the only family he has left, which are ââ¬Å"a reservation to be followed with such a number. I think he is stumbling over what to say the entire speech, with interrupted sentences, apostrophe, and the use of prose, which might indicate feeling rushed and lack of time in which he would usually have spoken poetry. By discussing sexism, it seems to be an easy play of Learââ¬â¢s to make that will surely injure Regan and Goneril, even though both are quite masculine in their powers. In the next section , he creates another sexist divide by assigning different responses to hardship per gender. Even the thought of crying would ââ¬Å"stain [his] manââ¬â¢s cheeksâ⬠in an act of weakness. While characterizing grief as womanly, Lear again associates being female as a deficiency in that one who is crying seems vulnerable and prone to attack, but such is not the same as one who is filled with ââ¬Å"noble anger. ââ¬

Life Of Walt Disney essays
Life Of Walt Disney essays Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, to Elias (Schickel,124) and Flora Disney (Walt Disney: A Biography,1). He was born in Chicago, Illinois to poverty. Disney had four other siblings (Walt Disney: A Biography,1) which included three brothers named Roy, Raymond, and Herbert and a sister named Ruth.(Through the Years 1859-1909,1-2) When he was four years old his family moved to a farm in Marceline, Missouri. At the age of eight Disney came to the conclusion that he wanted to draw cartoons like they did in the newspapers. The only problem was his family had no money for paper and pencils. In addition, his father thought drawing was a waste of time (DeWitt,10). When Disney was sixteen years old he, left the farm to join the service. While in the service, he drove an ambulance, and during his free time he would draw (Schickel,124). After he had left the service, he made cartoon advertisements that were shown in the movies (Disney(Walter Elias)Walt,1), until he set up a shop in Kansas City, Missouri. Then in 1923, at age 22, he opened a cartoon studio in Hollywood, California (Schickel,124). Later on, Disney married a lovely woman named Lillian and had two daughters, Diane and Sharon (Schindehette,52). In 1927, the famous mouse named Mickey was created by Ub Iwerks, who first envisioned the mouse (Phillips,100) but Lillian was credited with naming him (Schindehette,52). On the day of September 19, 1928, Steamboat Willie was released which starred Mickey; it was the first movie with a soundtrack (Knauer,118). For the next few years after that, a new Mickey film came to theaters every month! The movie Silly Symphony included the soon to be famous Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto (Disney(Walter Elias)Walt,1). Between the years of 1929 through 1939, Disney produced a series of full-color animated cartoons. Flowers and Trees was the first film in f...

Green Wedge Policy in Norfolk Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Green Wedge Policy in Norfolk - Assignment Example It is realised that the strategic gap and green wedge policies are important for the cities, being more flexible than the Green Belt policy. Local landscape planning authorities have seen the need of preserving an uncluttered landscape for conservation, as maintaining environmental balance is highly important for the city dwellers. When Green Wedge policy came into being, Norfolk was one of the selected cities for implementation of the plan. Green wedges are mainly the undeveloped land that is marked by city planners as the protected area, a kind of community land that should not be developed commercially. It comes under the plan of sustainable development in rural areas and will come up again and again as regions that have to be protected. Preliminary survey and assessment of the plans was done in the southern part of England, Norfolk included. Metro political District and Unitary Development Plan policies were excluded mainly because they were already included in the Green belt policies and again including them in the Green wedge policy was found unnecessary. It was already decided that they do not overlap. The preliminary survey did an assessment of all structural plans and policies. Again, most of the Green Wedges were planned in the Southern part of England. Some of the cities have already come under the Green Belt policy and they do not need Green Wedges. People manoeuvring the policy are trying to find suitable patterns for the whole country. They are also regulating to discover suitable features to be included owing to the special requirement of the particular town or city, within the countrywide pattern. Norfolk comes in the second category and number and mode of strategic gaps and green wedges and their requirements had to be planned for the purpose. Some comments and suggestions were welcomed for some time. But, District councils had to make their own plans and policies for implementing this ambitious plan. "In each case the account discusses the number and extent of strategic gaps and green wedges, their purposes, and any key Examination in Public (EIP) rulings which have affected the status of such policies" http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.aspid=1143456 Norfolk Country Council had always been preoccupied with the environmental balance of the county. It has to think about the river valleys, beautiful landscape, woodland and the wellknown Southern Bypass, most of which come under the southern part of the city. After the policy got approved in 1993, it became part of the major Structure Plan that got approved in 1999. there was a proposal in 1989 from the County Council suggesting that a Green Belt should be made around Norwich, and ultimately after much discussion, this proposal was rejected. But a preservation of environmental assets policy was introduced in its place. This policy was not only for preservation of the natural resources, but also for restraining and controlling of encroaching city expansions. This also intends to protect the historical heritage of the area and control the immediate countryside by creating green wedges and strategic gaps to restrict the unbriddled growth and 'ribbon development' of the city. Green Belt Policy for this area was held to be unsuitable because city growth was considered to be within limits and this makes the existing

Drama paper- August Wilson's Fences Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Drama paper- August Wilson's Fences - Essay Example For instance, the Big Bang Theory that was developed by theoretical physicists, and which is still studied up until today, argues that the Earth came about as a result of a gigantic collision of two monumental celestial bodies. There have been rather convincing evidences to this claim. In fact, science has successfully documented many proofs of the theoryââ¬â¢s parallel notion to the basic principles of physics. So, in considering spirituality, faith or religion, as against science, evolution, and the old-Earth creation, which way should you go? Personally, I have been through a lot of stern confrontations in the past in so far as my faith, my spirituality is concerned. Due to the fact that religion and Christianity have been made known to man for so many years, there is a sense of inevitability in the way people conceive God. For me, I would not say that I do not personally believe in God, but in the same manner, I have my own questions about life, my existence, and the Creation. The doubts could come from various facets. Firstly, the question about whether the Bible is indeed written by God, or by the prophet who He [God] has provided vision to. Logically, there could be no answer to these questions because before the Bible has been introduced to humanity, there was no pre-existing concept about God. Everything was purely a sight of nature, and even if we go back to the times of the prophets, we could not discern whether these prophets really did exist because the only account we have that tells of their pre-historical existence is the Bible. Hence, the Bible indeed requires faith, a strong faith. Following this argument, sometimes I tried to reconcile science and faith by transporting the findings of science to the accounts found in the Bible. But this is just entirely futile in that science and faith are two contradictory entities: Faith is in the light of faith; science is in the light of evidence. But I believe in both; hence, it places me in a crossro ad where a very difficult decision should be made. If only I intended to be partial at my discernment over this particular matter, it would have been a stumbling upshot for me. No belief needs to be discarded; both can co-exist but they, faith and science, should not be related in all essence. ` Sometimes, since I somehow consider myself a believer, God is rather real to me. In my walk with God, I would not say that everything was a walk-in-the-park or a bed of roses; there were also some stumbling encounters that really shook my little faith and question Godââ¬â¢s promises mentioned in the Bible. For instance, God said in John 3:16, ââ¬Å"For God so loved the word that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.â⬠(New International Version, John 3:16). At times, this verse could be very doubtful. Problem has been and will always be part of a personââ¬â¢s life. So, normally for a believer such as I, there is a insti nctive resort to God; but despite all of the confessions and sacrifices that you do, still you do not receive what you asked for. But it is not all sadness and confusion though. I have been through a lot of joyous moments in my walk with God. I know I am not the perfect believer but through time, I have learned to value Godââ¬â¢s love to humanity and His unending provision to His people. Sometimes, I also reach lofty heights of faith. In those instances, I have realized that belief in God and His promises are not merely determined by how much logic you have in your

Milk Packaging Essay Example for Free
Milk Packaging Essay Milk packaging can be very varied and the types of packaging have increased over time. The aim of packaging is both practical and commercial. So there is need for packaging suppliers to include both these aspects while desiging a packing. Practical AIM: It must carry the milk and keep it fresh. Commercial AIM : keeping the cost down and marketing the product. There are three main types of milk which are differentiated with their labelling and coloured caps Full cream milk ââ¬âblue coloured cap. Low fat milk- red coured cap. However, the decline of the doorstep delivery led to the sale of milk through supermarkets which led to the introduvtion of a variety of packaging formats like-Glass bottles, cardboard cartons ,plastic bottles, Tetra Pak cartons and low density polyethylene plastic milk containers. TRENDS IN MILK PACKAGING 1.Well into the 20th century, milk was transported in large metal cans and purchased at a local dairy or from the farmer, who distributed it by horse and cart. Families used small dippers to fill their domestic vessels from the cans. 2. The earliest milk bottles were generic, designed for a range of liquids and came with cardboard tops. 3. School milk came in smaller half-pint (235-mL) bottles, pictured here with a ââ¬Ëdobberââ¬â¢, the tool used for opening them. 4. A plea to retain home delivery(obsolete). 5. A range of specialist milks begins to appear Glass Bottles The traditional milk packaging were introduced in the 1880s. They originally had necks that started relatively low on the bottle, although these have now developed they are narrower and shorter. The lettering appears directly on the bottle. This was originally built into the bottles during manufacturing, but were then started to be painted on directl, being cheaper and a while also allowing for stronger marketing device.
